Mastering Large Tile Installation: The Art of Tile Leveling Systems

In the realm of setting large or bowed tiles, the go-to solution for precision is a “leveling system” or a “lippage control system.” These invaluable tools ensure that the finish edges of tiles align almost seamlessly, maintaining a flat surface. It’s essential to note that while a lippage system contributes to surface flatness, it cannot compensate for an uneven subfloor or backer board. Adequate preparation to achieve a level and flat foundation is crucial before employing these systems, as they are designed to fine-tune minor lippage, not correct dips or humps in the floor.

What They Look Like:

Most lippage systems take the form of an upside-down T. The “branches” of the T are positioned beneath the tile, while the “stem” extends vertically. The stem serves as the attachment point for the cap or wedge. Applying pressure from the top effectively sandwiches the tiles, forcing them to sit flush with one another.

Components of Lippage Systems:

1. Spacer:

• Positioned under the tile to achieve the desired spacing.

• Common spacer sizes: 1/16”, 2mm, and ⅛”.

2. Cap or Wedge:

• Installed after the spacer to secure it between the tiles.

L 3. Gun:

• Some systems include a “gun” to apply additional pressure, ensuring a lip-free finish.

My Lippage System: Spin Doctors

I prefer using Spin Doctors, a two-part system featuring a screw protruding from the spacer and a cap that screws down to compress the tile. This system stands out for its simplicity and doesn’t require a separate gun. While occasional tile movement during tightening may occur, a quick correction with a tile mallet swiftly addresses this challenge.
